20 in 2020 - No Excuses

February 6, 2020
Tom Gresham

Last week I proposed what I called the 20 in 2020 plan. I'm asking everyone who is serious about protecting the Second Amendment to devote 20 minutes a day to the cause. That's about how long it takes to drink that first cup of coffee each morning.

Don't worry about what to do. I'll help.

First, though, is why. We have an opportunity. It's a brief one. Shame on us if we don't take advantage of it. The opportunity is the 2020 election.

Here's my thinking. We need four more years of Trump and the judges and justices he puts on the benches. Without strong legal decisions on 2A rights, we continue to suffer the tyranny of the majority. Fundamental rights should not be subject to the whims of the time.

Let me put a fine point on this. State after state has succumbed to the Bloomberg marketing blitz and has passed restrictions on gun owners. From "Red Flag" laws to the so-called Universal Background Checks to bans on the most popular firearms and even standard capacity magazines.  What if we could wave a magic wand and make most of them disappear? That's possible.

The "magic wand" would be a Supreme Court ruling that puts teeth into the Heller decision, where Justice Scalia wrote that the government cannot ban guns that are in common use. Yes, that wording troubles some Second Amendment scholars who say (probably correctly) that all guns should be protected, not just those in common use. However, what we have could be a powerful way to eliminate many of the gun bans being instituted by states.

If the Supreme Court were to say that states can't ban semi-auto firearms or standard capacity magazines, those laws (after court challenges, no doubt) would go away.

How do we make that happen? The re-election of President Trump would allow him to continue to nominate judges and justices. As of today, he has put 187 judges on federal benches and two justices on the Supreme Court. Add another 100 federal judges and one or two more justices, and we have a 30-year impact.

Our window is nine months -- until election day in November.

What can you do? It's actually not difficult at all.

First, commit to getting and staying informed. Get a Twitter account and follow me there. I'm @GUNTALK on Twitter. I will provide links to online stories that will keep you up to date. I will be your "clipping service." That will take five to 10 minutes a day.

Next, join all of your state gun rights organizations. That's about the only way you can stay informed on the challenges your state faces and hear about meetings, rallies, and protests.

Join the Second Amendment Foundation. I believe this group is the leader in 2A litigation. I also like the Firearms Policy Coalition.

Volunteer. This is where we win. Work a booth at the local gun show to register people to vote. Volunteer to help local and state candidates who really do support gun rights and will openly say they oppose red flag laws, universal background checks, and any bans on any firearms. Your time spent helping these candidates makes a difference.

The other thing you can do is become outspoken. To everyone. Everywhere. It's time to put stickers on your cars and trucks. It's time to attend school board and city council meetings. And it's critical that you go to the state legislature when committees are discussing gun bills. Every state has people introducing repressive gun bills. The Bloomberg lackeys will be there. If we don't show up in numbers, legislators think the gun banners represent the majority opinion.

If we don't show up, we lose. It's that simple.

No excuses. No alibis. You can't do everything, but you can do something. If ten million gun owners get active in this election cycle, we win. If we stay active, we can push back the unconstitutional restrictions being funded by Michael Bloomberg.

That's the plan. It's simple. It requires only 20 minutes of your day. ~ Tom
