Testing Black Hills Ammo’s 5.56 Loads

Ryan Gresham from Guns & Gear visits with Black Hills Ammunition in South Dakota to explore their 5.56/.223 loads. Jeff Hoffman highlights the importance of bullet construction in performance, showcasing various types like the V-Max for varmint hunting, Soft Point for medium game, and TSX Monolithic bullets for deep penetration and defensive use. Each bullet type is tested in ballistic gel to demonstrate differences in fragmentation, penetration, and weight retention.

The tests reveal that while bullet weight varies slightly, construction plays a critical role in effectiveness. The 60-grain V-Max excels in creating large cavities with minimal penetration, ideal for small game, while the 62-grain TSX penetrates deeply, retaining 100% of its weight, making it suitable for defense and larger game hunting.
