Dove Day Deals

For most folks across the country, Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer. Shopping deals are plentiful, and an explosion of pumpkin spice lattes and Ugg boots overwhelms the senses. For shooters and hunters, it marks the beginning of a wide array of hunting seasons. Dove season is upon us, and there are deals to be had before opening day.

Comfort Driven
I’ve experienced dove hunting that just plain sucks, spending more time on my feet searching for doves or driving out mesquite thickets in the unrelenting heat. If this day strikes again, I’ll need some comfortable boots. Merrell Reflex Waterproof Mid Hikers blend all-day comfort and durability into an all-leather constructed boot. Long days on the feet in dove season provide enough break-in time for use during deer season. BUY here.

Grounded Stability
Stability reigns when shooting dove. Without a solid base, quick, passing shots seem impossible. This goes for standing and seated positions. The Northern Flight Chair deploys quickly and hides away easily. To get a firm base, post up with good posture and lean into your shot. Doves are fast little machines so lead them accordingly. Enough Ammo
When I miss a dove, I miss it all three shots. Let’s be honest. I carry more rounds with me during dove season than any other season. For one, dove season always sneaks up on me. The first ten-to-twenty doves fly by so fast it looks more like an F1 race than it does hunting. Ammo deals are out there in abundance. Here’s the Winchester Super Dove that comes in at a mere $74.99 per case! BUY here.

On a String
Doves love a party. In fact, the more the merrier. A typical spread for me includes movement and at least 8-10 stationary decoys. The Clip-On Dove decoys come in a four pack and sets up in an instant on any barbed wire fence or tree limbs. Purchase a couple packs to entice doves to slow the pace for easier shots. BUY here.

After Care
The best part of dove season is eating the harvest, of course. A solid, all-purpose knife is essential. Dove breast easily detaches with the right equipment. The Havalon Baracuta skinning knife seamlessly glides through, giving hunters perfect trims of meat for the grill. BUY here. Quick recipe: Dove breast, cream cheese, jalapeño and wrap it in bacon. Place on the grill and wait to devour. A pretty easy recipe and widely known as dove poppers.

No matter how you enjoy dove hunting, do it in a safe and responsible manner. If the sun is blazing hot and birds move primarily in the early and later hours, scout during the day. Get excited because dove days are here. ~ KJ
